Píše se rok 2654 a válka s agresivními Kiletary je na spadnutí. Hlavní velitelství na hvězdě Vega, kde je umístěn nepostradatelný Navcom, umožňující skokové přesuny při vesmírných plavbách, hlásí nečekaný útok nepřítele. Země se tak ocitne v bezprostředním nebezpečí a nezbývá mnoho času na záchranu. Poblíž se nachází pouze kosmická loď kapitána Taggerta s dvoučlennou posádkou - piloty Marshalem a Blairem. A právě Chris Blair, aniž to tuší, se stává poslední nadějí lidstva. Jeho matka, po níž mu zbyl tajemný medailon, totiž patřila k vymírající rase "poutníků". Byli to první vesmírní výzkumníci, u nichž se vyvinul speciální dar vnitřní prostorové a časové orientace, k níž nepotřebovali žádné navigační přístroje. Chris, který tyto výjimečné schopnosti zdědil, tedy musí dokázat to, čeho žádný jiný smrtelník není schopen - skok z pulsaru Charybda směrem k ohrožené Zemi. Kdyby se mu to nepovedlo, lidská civilizace zanikne...
